I read Exiles because the setting was Nepal. I did enjoy it, it was easy to read. Good story but I don't think it was great writing. The Orange Eats Creeps was a difficult read for me. It was exciting writing, i'm going to say hallucinatory because i'm limited in vocabulary- it was burroughs/ ginsberg-ish. I just didn't particularly engage with the character. Perhaps because I am not a vampire slut. Old Angel Midnight is Kerouac in his most loose prose that I have read- he would have been a good rapper. If You Knew Then What I know Now was on several year-end lists but I wasn't impressed.
Crimes in Southern Indiana mentions specific types of guns on almost every page of this short-story collection. The writing is simple, plain and awesome. I'm going to reference Raymond Chandler though I am way off. Similarly, the short stories in From the Darkness Right Under Our Feet take place in nearby Illinois but these chronicle teenage and young adults, though no less criminal. Made me think of Gummo. For a good mix of the two, and which I was deeply engrossed and couldn't put down, The Devil All the Time inhabits Southern Ohio. Wow. Old-time religion, a murderous couple luring hitchhikers with sex, crooked cops. I MUST read Donal Ray Pollock's short story collection Knockemstiff- it is on the way.
I read Open City directly after Leaving the Atoche Station. Teju Cole is a great writer and I love to read anything about/in New York. It had a nice flow and certainly took me a few places I didn't expect. But I was really bored at times or maybe I just come from a really different place- he REALLY goes off on classical music and important writing and, in general, it seemed as if he was trying to impress and I wasn't often moved. Atoche Station I was much more consumed by and was a closer work to my own life.
A Visit from the Goon Squad is amazing. It was difficult at times for me to understand what was happening but now it helps me to see the work as almost a short story collection as we drop in on the cast of characters at different parts of their lives. It was just fun to read.
Next is remarkable, next-level shit. A guy walks around Austin, telling us everything he sees. There is a BIG ending. I guess it is a middle-aged man looking back book. I don't want to be so easily conforming to this role but, at times, I related to the sad man. Next is probably a must-read.

I made a similar post to this a few months back- a list of books I had read recently. I felt weird about it, felt like I was bragging, which i certainly wasn't as the list was lacking in things like length and sophistication. I saw the nick hornsby (i have never read any of his books) makes a similar list on the believer site and now I feel better about it. So, I will make these lists more often- So that I can look back and remember what I have read.

I finally read The Kids are All Right. I can't believe I waited so long. Four siblings tell the story of how they get by after the loss of both of their parents. They each take turns recounting stories, it is often hilarious. I love how they each remember it all a little differently.

The Hypomanic Edge was of interests to me because of long chapters on Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Carnagie, and Christopher Columbus. Basically, they were nuts and somehow they made it. Hardly the blueprint.

Life After God is a collection of short stories and does not make me want to read further works by Douglas Coupland.

Citrus County reminds me a lot of Padgett Powell's Edisto. Maybe because the protagonist is a Florida boy in both. I did not want to read another 'kid' book but this hooked me pretty quickly. For some reason I was expecting something much more sinister out of it, but nonetheless I enjoyed and am looking forward to reading John Brandon's first novel Arkansas.

The Fermata is the first erotic fiction I have read I guess. It was instantly funny and that is why I was reading and I wasn't expecting him to go as far with the erotica but it was awesome. I can't really describe this book- I would make it sound lame "a guy stops time and lives out his sexual fantasies" but there is a lot more going on here. I've not read anything like it and is my favorite book I read this year that was not written in this year.

Pulphead is just awesome awesome awesome. John Jeremiah Sullivan's essays. I had read his story of meeting with Bunny Wailer in Jamaica in GQ and was anxious for this release. Just read it.

Leaving the Atocha Station is beautiful, funny, and I instantly related (somehow). Ben Lerner's debut novel. Mostly we follow a poet on a fellowship in Spain as he wastes his time.

SON OF SID delayed. For those of you wondering when the movie will be completed- late Spring 2012 is now the projected finish date. I guess we were being optimistic. It will be nice to share it with you.

December 25th- NBA season started. I am very happy.
I recently sold my Lebron 8 P.S. shoes pictured above.

I bought these all-black Hyperdunks.
This is no slight on Lebron but the Hyperdunk is just better for my foot.
The Lebrons made me feel futuristic, sad to see them go.

I could be terribly wrong but here is my prediction for the 2012 playoffs:

While shooting Son of Sid everyone involved took many photos. Except me. I only took this one out of the plane window when flying out of Kathmandu. People on the plane were pointing and saying "Everest". So i grabbed my camera and took this photo. But there are two peaks in this photo and I'm not even sure which mountain they were pointing at. So this is my maybe everest photo. 20" x 30" poster prints of this photo are available on the Kickstarter page for Son of Sid.

Bill Callahan, Riding for the Feeling video

Recently, Peat Duggins and Ryan Hennessee animated a painting by Max Galyon that hangs on the wall in Bill Callahan's house for the song "Riding for the Feeling" off of his new album Apocalypse on Drag City.

Bill had the idea for the video. My role was asking Peat and Ryan if they would make it work.

In the near future, I will post here an extensive animation for his song "America" by Ryan, Peat, and Sterling Allen. This has been fun.

I am calling it "SON OF SID"

My funding came from ART MATTERS. An amazing organization.

SON of SID is expected to be finished summer 2011.

Lauren Luloff is the real deal, all-day-long kind of artist. These three paintings "yellow circle", "white resist", and "birch peeling" were included in the group show at okay mountain. For her, these were quite small (and subtle).

The glasstire.com reviewer found these paintings to be the only work of merit in the show. Read here.
